The Blue Line Corridor: A $400M Bet on Sports and Entertainment
Prince George’s County is currently moving forward with one of its most ambitious economic plans in decades. The Central Avenue Blue/Silver Line Sector Plan is a massive effort to transform the area between Capitol Heights and Largo into a premier destination for sports, culture, and high-density living. While the region has long been known as a transit hub, county leaders are now pivoting toward a stadium to downtown model that turns parking lots and empty spaces into vibrant, walkable neighborhoods. This strategy is backed by a $400 million investment from the state and county to build a new sense of place in the heart of Maryland.
A major piece of this puzzle was recently unveiled at Prince George’s Stadium, the home of the Chesapeake Baysox. Ahead of the 2026 season, the stadium underwent a series of fan-focused upgrades designed to make it a year-round attraction. New features include a Chesapeake Bay-themed kids zone, improved ADA-accessible viewing areas, and a massive video display at the main entrance to engage fans. These improvements are part of a larger modernization project intended to meet Major League Baseball standards. By making the stadium more modern and welcoming, the county hopes to draw in larger crowds for events like the upcoming Banana Ball World Tour, which brings thousands of new visitors to the area.
Beyond the ballpark, the Blue Line Corridor plan focuses on transit-oriented development. This means building new apartments, shops, and restaurants within walking distance of Metro stations. The goal is to create a downtown feel for Largo and the surrounding areas. Public hearings held in March 2026 allowed residents to share their thoughts on new zoning rules that will make this vision a reality. When finished, the project is expected to create a $1.3 billion economic impact over the next ten years. It is a bold move to ensure that Prince George’s County is not just a place people travel through, but a place where they choose to stay, shop, and play.
