Opening Doors: The New Push for Equity in Local Contracts

In Prince George’s County, we’ve always known that our local businesses are the heartbeat of our community. But for many Black-owned firms in the DMV, there is a new, larger dream taking shape. It’s not just about selling a great product to the neighbors we see every day—it’s about having the chance to serve our community on a much bigger scale by securing major contracts with the county government and regional giants.

Historically, small minority-owned firms have often faced a "red tape" barrier that made it tough to compete with national corporations. But there is a fresh sense of pride in the air as the Prince George’s County Chamber of Commerce doubles down on its Equity in Procurement (EIP) program. This isn't just a training course; it’s a masterclass in helping local entrepreneurs scale their operations to meet the needs of heavy hitters like CareFirst, Pepco, and Clark Construction.

When a local IT firm in Bowie or a catering team in Upper Marlboro lands a multi-million dollar contract, it’s a win for all of us. That money stays right here—it hires our young people, funds our parks, and proves that Prince George’s is a powerhouse of talent. As we move through 2026, we’re seeing the marketplace evolve into a more diverse, local, and fiercely capable landscape. We aren't just open for business; we're ready to lead.
